-------- Saving with Good Maintenance HabitsIt is amazing how easily we forget to provide proper maintenance to the things we use every day. It is not because we don't remember the proper maintenance procedures - we do know them very well. Then why we are very eager to buy an item, and then forget about providing maintenance for it? I was just about to toss some of my trusted, though old and dull, kitchen knives in favor of a new set. Why? I almost thought that resharpening them would end up costing more than the knives themselves. I almost gave myself an excuse to buy a new shiny set.But then I found The Village Sharpener just on my way to work (Marlborough, Massachusetts, USA). Two dollars ($2.00) per knife was all I needed to have them resharpened (their website mentions $5 a piece, but he may have cut me a deal because of the quantity). I must confess that initially I just brought half my knife block thinking that it would cost me a fortune. Now I feel as if I have new knives, and I am ready and eager to enjoy cooking with them again. Now I wonder, how many other tools I have around the house that I have allowed to deteriorate. And then again, I wonder why? It could certainly be out of laziness: Hey! Who likes the idea of cleaning and maintaining equipment? Almost nobody! But then again, who likes the idea of working long hours at a job that I don't enjoy every day to be able to pay top price for new equipment? I am starting to believe we avoid proper maintenance in favor of new purchases be because it is so easy and fun to acquire new tools, as opposed to repairing or maintaining the ones we already have. In the process, we just destroy another piece of our environment, and add some more hours to our careers. I do not know about your career, but mine is not fun all the time. And I do not know about your environment, but mine could need some help. |
